The 2012 Austin Film Festival

The 2012 Austin Film Festival takes place October 18-25. Panelists include all kinds of awesome writers and producers, from Damon Lindelof and Aline Brosh McKenna to Paul Feig and Marti Noxon.

A script of mine made it to the Second Round/Top 10% before being eliminated, meaning I'm offered some kind of TBD discounted admission. I've always heard that Austin is a very writer-friendly festival & conference (plus, I feel like nobody there will judge me for stuffing my face with macaroni and cheese). Is anyone going? Have you gone in the past? Would love to hear some feedback in the comments.

I went last year and plan to go this year. It's fantastic, not just because of the information you get at the panels -- but also because of the friends you meet and make.

(There's also quite a few good films to see while you're there)

The best part is that it's an environment that gets and appreciates writers. If you have the chance to you, I think you'll find it worth your time.

This will be my ninth year in a row. It's absolutely the greatest time. Everyone speaks your language and there are no egos.

Warning: If you go you will lose much sleep and will want to go back every year for the rest of your life.

I'm going this year for the first time, and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be the guy near the bar fighting to overcome my misanthropy, agoraphobia, and shyness. Fortunately my equally outgoing writing partner will be attending with me, so I'll have someone to talk to while I'm being anti-social and bad with crowds.

I'll be there. I've never attended before, but I'm originally from the Austin area and always wanted to go. So I'm finally biting the bullet and doing it.

I plan on attending for the first time this year. A number of the panels/panelists I really want to see, so I hope to have a very good time.

Thanks, everyone!

I'm a second rounder too and also debating whether it's worth the time and money to attend. The panels look amazing and it's always great to meet like-minded artists but... but... but. Yeah. Isn't this time better spent writing? I dunno. Really on the fence. Like a fence post is up my butt, on the fence, you know?

Go. It's a blast and it's inspiring.

Amanda, I went last year for the first time. Overall, it was a pretty fantastic time. Trolling Austin for the first time and making some unique networking contacts were the highlight (as were a few Shane Black-based panels). There were a few clunker moments, as well. I wrote about it here:

I would certainly go back - but can't afford to this year. Based on John August and Craig Mazin's live Scriptnotes podcast planned, and Chris Carter getting honored, looks like I picked the wrong year to go.

PS: Congrats to a fellow second-rounder.
