Emm-E

I've never been really into award shows, but the Emmys are kind of a big deal. And I would totally be up for getting one someday. Click here to see a list of all the nominees.

Here are some highlights, from the writerly perspective:

COMEDY SERIES
“30 Rock” (NBC)
“Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO)
“Entourage” (HBO)
“The Office” (NBC)
“Two and a Half Men” (CBS)

DRAMA SERIES
“Boston Legal” (ABC)
“Damages” (FX)
“Dexter” (Showtime)
“House” (Fox)
“Lost” (ABC)
“Mad Men” (AMC)

James Bobin, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie - "Flight Of The Conchords" ("Yoko") (HBO)Jack Burditt - "30 Rock" ("Rosemary’s Baby") (NBC)
Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky - "The Office" ("Dinner Party") (NBC)
Tina Fey - "30 Rock"("Cooter") (NBC)

Matthew Weiner, Robin Veith - "Mad Men" ("The Wheel") (AMC)
David Simon, (teleplay), Ed Burns - "The Wire" ("30") (HBO)

I admit I am sad that Friday Night Lights didn't make it...but it is the first time ever that basic cable shows were nominated for Best Drama, so that is very exciting. Mad Men is also the first basic cable series to snag to honor of most nominations for a drama. The ever-increasing quality and variety of cable programming almost makes up for how America's obsession with reality TV makes my soul hurt.

It looks like Mad Men is definitely the hottest show to spec right now, huh?

According to my sources, the title of hottest new drama spec actually belongs to Dexter.

However, LOTS of people I know are already writing or HAVE WRITTEN Dexters, so if you see this and decide to start one now to catch the Dexter wave, you might already be too late.

Plus, if everyone's writing a Dexter, chances are your Mad Men...or Burn Notice...or Pushing Daisies...might come as a welcome respite from serial killing anti-heroes.

That's my hope, anyway...

Got a Dexter. Got a Mad Men. Got a questionable Pushing Daisies...for the moment.

I'd really like to do a Burn Notice, but I wonder if there's enough awareness of it. Seems like it might be too under the radar. (?)

I do think that the Emmy nominations is a great starting point for looking toward what's the next spec.
