I'm F*cking Ben Affleck

I'm sure you've seen this already, but just in case. It's good to know that Hollywood can have a sense of humor, that it's not only into creepy violent westerns.

Hi Amanda!

I google searched writing internships and your blog came up as one of the top 5 choices. I was wondering if you currently write for television and how you got started? Have you won writing contests? Were you able to get one of these coveted writing internships? Thank you for your time!

Hi Sara -

I don't write for TV yet; I'm still aspiring. No, I haven't won any contests. I've only applied for a couple, and the big studio fellowships are very competitive and generally designed to be diversity initiatives. There aren't as many TV writing contests as screenwriting contests out there to begin with...regardless, they can be good for giving you a deadline, but they won't necessarily open a ton of doors even if you win.

I don't think there are a whole lot of "writing internships" out there; the only official one I know of is the one supported by the Emmy Foundation - you can read the info at http://www.emmys.org/foundation/internships.php - but I got rejected. It's more common to actually get paid as a writer's assistant after you've graduated, but these jobs are never posted - you need to know someone or do a lot of cold calling and have a lot of luck.
